A sailor day in Pasaia  A sailor day in Pasaia

Live the Basque maritime culture in one of the most important ports in the north of the peninsula, Pasaia's harbour, whose natural orography has been a protection against the fierceness of the Cantabrian Sea. The access to the harbour is so narrow that it seems impossible that a ship can go through it.

Option 1

We invite you to enjoy a typical sailor day in Pasaia. We will start our day with a tour in the quay to visit, with the help of a sailor, the fish market, from Monday to Friday, the boat-museum Mater and the traditional Basque fishing boat. Here you will discover the secrets of traditional fishing techniques and the singular lifestyle of seamen. Take a break with a typical sailor snack on board, while you look at the uniqueness of this traditional boat. Afterwards, we will continue our journey with a visit to Albaola - The Sea Factory of the Basques. This exhibition contains more than 30 boats of great ethnographic value. Some of them are being repaired at the moment, so Albaola Factory is the perfect place to learn about traditional naval engineering.

On your way to the restaurant you will also see rowing boats, skiffs and even rowing training sessions in the installations of the rowing club.

We suggest that after having lunch in a restaurant with views to the Bay, you make a guided tour in the historic centre of Pasai Donibane, where you will have the chance to visit the museum House of Victor Hugo. This well-known French writer was astonished with the beauty of Pasaia and his writings will be helpful to get into the Pasaia of the 19th century.

Afterwards, we will go on a guided journey through the calm waters of the Bay on a small boat in order to enjoy the charming estuary and the nearby cliffs. To finish we will disembark in Pasai San Pedro. In the historic centre of this you will find the birth house of the great admiral Blas de Lezo.

Option 2

If you love the sea and have an adventurous spirit, we encourage you to enjoy Pasaia in a different way. Get on board of the boat-museum Mater and feel like a real sailor navigating in a traditional fishing boat.

The opportunity of sailing on board of a real fishing boat with the experiences lived by a sailor will teach you the sustainable fishing techniques used by our boats and the importance of taking care of the environment. Moreover, there is the chance to practice responsible sport fishing from the vessel.

Once in the harbour, you will have lunch on board while looking at the continuous port activity of the Bay of Pasaia.
In the afternoon, now in land, we invite you to discover, with a guided tour, the singular historic centre of Pasaia full of maritime points and with the flavour of sea in all of its corners.
