We propose you a walk through the Bay of Pasaia, but in a special way: hand in hand with the famous writer Victor Hugo, following his steps in Pasaia.


From Donostia to Pasaia

DESCRIPTION OF THE ROUTE

 

 

Ulia

Victor Hugo arrived from Donostia to Pasaia walking through the Mount Ulia. Today, this walk of almost 8km belongs to the coastal route of Talaia, which goes from Bidart to Donostia. The way offers us amazing landscapes, the cliffs that dominate the entry of the Bay of Pasaia, or the bucolic view-points of the lighthouse of La Plata surrounded by trees, between others. Then we present you a slightly longer route, starting from the Aquarium of Donostia, and ending in the House of Victor Hugo in Pasaia.

Thanks to Albaola – the Sea Factory, Victor Hugo could see how the bank carpentry, one of the main activities of the port of Pasaia in the past, is still alive. Nowadays, there we can see the construction works of the replica of the galleon San Juan, of the XVI. century.

From the balcony of the bedroom of the house where he stayed, nowadays Victor Hugo would see the traditional tuna Mater Ecoactive Museum Boat: the floating museum that shows us its extraordinary past and the fishing techniques that are used these days. During the summer, the tuna boat Mater offers us different activities: outings to the sea, workshops and guided tours, between others.

Across the bay by boat

In the same place where the anxious boatwomen waited in the XIX.century, the motorboat of the Itxas Zerbi company crosses the bay nowadays, connecting the two historical centers that Victor Hugo knew, Pasai Donibane and Pasai San Pedro.

Víctor Hugo House

When Victor Hugo came to Pasaia in 1843, he could not imagine that the house where he stayed would be known as the House of Victor Hugo. Today, this house has become in the Tourist Office and in a museum in homage to the writer: the first museum opened in Euskadi and that is still opened, turned into a pilgrimage center by the thousands of tourists who arrive there following his steps.
